Web Services
The Network Group supports a number of web services to streamline the process of
connecting a system to Carnegie Mellon's network. These services are:
Network Registration SystemNetReg is our central database for managing machine registrations, DHCP settings, DNS zones and resources, and outlet registration.Virtual Private NetworkThe VPN Server provides IP address extension services. Due to the continued variability in support for tunneling and encryption across many platforms, this service offers no encryption of data while en route to campus. We continue to evaluate products and hope to offer a better solution as the market matures.DialupThe Dialup Accounting server provides a real-time view of remaining prime time usage of our campus modem pools.BandwidthThe Bandwidth Accounting server provides access to machine bandwidth utilization information. Guidelines for use of commodity Internet bandwidth and wireless bandwidth help ensure access to bandwidth when needed.NetMonNetMon has user-accessible tools for diagnosing network connectivity difficulties. It can query the DHCP lease logs in real-time as well as provide information from CAM and ARP tables of campus network devices.AuthBridgeWhen connecting an unregistered network card on either our Wireless network or the NetBar public ethernet network, your web browser will automatically be directed to the AuthBridge registration page. Once authenticated, registration is immediate.StatisticsOur statistics page contains links to graphs representing the traffic and other dynamic characteristics of some systems.Certificate AuthorityThe Network Group Certificate Authority provides client certificates to members of the group. This service is not publically accessible.Finger, Ping, and TracerouteWeb-enabled finger, ping, and traceroute are available for diagnosing network difficulties. |
